Coronavirus: Pubs to stay shut for months as minister confirms they'll be last in lockdown

Pubs, restaurants and hotels will be "among the last" businesses to have lockdown restrictions lifted, a senior minister has confirmed.

It comes amid reports that a phased "traffic light" approach to lifting the lockdown was being developed.

Mr Gove denied there was a plan for schools and nurseries to open from May 11.

But he said it was correct to say the hospitality industry would remain closed until the end of the lockdown.

He said: "Yes, that is true. They will be among the last."

He added: "This virus has changed so much. It's a new virus of great potency and lethality. It spreads remarkably fast.

"We want to make sure that we can get on top of it.

"We also want to ensure the economic life of the nation, the social life of the nation, can return over time, but even as some restrictions are lifted, the way in which our schools, the way in which our shops and factories operate, will change as a result of what we know about this virus and what we know about social distancing.

"And of course we want to make sure that the scientific advice guides us as we take an approach towards easing these restrictions in the right way with appropriate safeguards."

Earlier, Mr Gove denied reports that the Government has drawn up a graduated plan to start easing the coronavirus lockdown within weeks.

Asked if the claim about the so-called "traffic light" strategy was correct, the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster told Sky News's Sophy Ridge On Sunday: "No, it is not."
