Coronavirus postpones celebrity football match starring former Leeds United manager Simon Grayson

A celebrity football match starring former Leeds United manager Simon Grayson and a whole host of sports stars has been postponed due to fears over coronavirus.

Grayson had lined up a number of former international cricketers, musicians and other celebrities to take on a Bedale Legends XI in a charity football match.

IBF world featherweight champion Josh Warrington, former England international bowlers Steve Harmison and Ryan Sidebottom, and Kaiser Chiefs bassist Simon Rix were among those due to play in the match on Suanday, April 5.

Kasabian bassist Chris Edwards and Pigeon Detectives duo Matt Bowman and Ryan Wilson were also part of Grayon's squad, but the match has been temporarily postponed.

Organiser Martyn Coombs said: "At our weekly planning meeting, we took the decision to DELAY the celebrity football game scheduled for Sunday April 5, 2020.

"I am sure you will agree this was the only decision we could have taken in the light of the worsening situation the country finds itself in.

"The best thing is, when we resume, all the serious planning is in place so it will be easy to get going again.

"Let’s hope this Covid-19 virus malarkey settles down soon so we can find another date in the diary and raise some serious money for Prostate Cancer, Steve Walsh and Phil Thompson.

"Apologies for any inconvenience and I hope we can count on everyone’s support when we play the game at a later date."

The game was planned to raise money for three charities - Prostate Cancer UK, the Halcyon Trust and also Phil 'Tommo' Thompson, a local man who is currently undergoing chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment.
