Coronavirus: Portugal shuts all schools and declares 'state of alert'

The government of Portugal has announced all schools will close while pumping billions of euros into businesses as the coronavirus pandemic continues.

Portugal has so far reported 112 confirmed cases of coronavirus, far below neighbouring Spain where dozens of people have died.

However, hits to the country's vitally important hotel sector has convinced the ruling party to put together a €2.3billion package, delay some tax payments and grant soft loans to help out struggling businesses.

Prime Minister Antonio Costa has also announced that all schools will be shut from next week in a bid to control the virus's spread.

Workers who have to stay at home to care for school children of up to 12 years of age will receive 66% of their base salaries, the government said.

Cruise ships will not be allowed to disembark passengers at the country's docks, except those who live in Portugal.

Night clubs will also be closed and capacity restrictions on entry to shopping malls and restaurants are to come into force.

All events held in close spaces with more than 1,000 people have been prohibited, as well those held in open spaces with over 5,000 people.

Neighbouring country Spain has declared a state of emergency, with Madrid on lockdown and resorts in Ibiza and Majorca closing bars.

Schools and colleges in Catalonia have closed.

The country now has 4,334 confirmed cases of coronavirus and 122 people have died.
