Coronavirus: Police warning over 999 calls following Boris Johnson’s lockdown announcement

Avon and Somerset Police alongside other police forces have warned against calling 999 after Boris Johnson announced the country is going into shutdown.

Avon and Somerset Police have said their lines have been busy and warned lines need to remain available for people in a real emergency.

From across the rest of the region, the Chief Constable of Dorset Police took to social media pledging they would continue to support communities and ensure everyone stays safe.

Wiltshire Police have said their strategic coordinating group will be meeting this morning (March 24).

It all comes after Boris Johnson announced new measures last night on the stricter measures the government will be introducing.

The new measures mean people will only be able to head out to work if absolutely necessary, visit sick relatives, go out for one form of exercise or get essential shopping.

The measures will be in place for the next three weeks and the police will have the power to fine people if they flout these restrictions.

It comes after the death toll in the UK reached 335.

The number of confirmed cases in the south west stands at 278, with 32 in Gloucestershire and 19 in South Gloucestershire.

The Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab also warned Brits to return home before flights are grounded entirely and airports shut.
