Coronavirus: Police charge teenager over racially-aggravated Oxford Street assault

A 15-year-old boy has been charged after a Singaporean student was attacked in Oxford Street and told "we don't want your coronavirus in our country".

The teenager will appear at Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court on August 10 accused of wounding or inflicting GBH without intent in connection with the racially aggravated assault.

Jonathan Mok, 23, was attacked by a group as he walked along Oxford Street near Tottenham Court Road station at about 9.15pm on February 24.

The University College London student described being punched in the face and racially abused over the coronavirus outbreak.

Speaking to the BBC after the attack, Mr Mok said he felt the pandemic had been used by some as an excuse to "further hatred for people different from them".

"I just think it's a pity to have such experiences taint the image of this beautiful city [that has] so many nice people," he said.

Images of Mr Mok's bruised eye posted on Facebook have been shared thousands of times (Facebook)

A 16-year-old boy who was arrested on March 4 in connection with the attack has been released with no further action.
