An Irish coronavirus patient who was being treated for the illness has sadly died.

It's not yet known if the patient was a male or female, but they are understood to have been elderly and being treated at a hospital "in the East of the country" for a number of days.

The Irish Times reports that the patient had first presented with respiratory symptoms before being diagnosed with novel coronavirus. The patient died earlier today.

Dublin Live contacted the Department of Health for comment, however a health source confirmed the tragic news in the past few minutes.

The tragic news comes after ten new cases of coronavirus were confirmed yesterday, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the country to 34.

A further two cases have today been confirmed in Northern Ireland, taking the total across the island to 52.
