Coronavirus: People self-isolating with symptoms to get new NHS 'check-in' texts

People who are self-isolating after becoming ill with coronavirus symptoms will now get regular check-in texts from the NHS.

The government launched the new service on Saturday, which will send daily messages to patients who register their symptoms and contact details with the 111 online service.

The texts will check how people are and ensure those who need help during the quarantine period can receive it.

It comes after Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Health Secretary Matt Hancock both confirmed on Friday that they have tested positive for the flu-like virus.

Announcing the new service, Mr Hancock said: “I know all too well that experiencing symptoms can be worrying, but for those living on their own it will be even more so.

“Alongside other measures, this new daily text service will reassure our most vulnerable that they are not alone, and also to help them manage their symptoms.”

As the UK battles the coronavirus pandemic - which has now claimed 1,000 lives - anyone experiencing symptoms consistent with the virus must stay home for seven days.

Anyone who lives with someone who has symptoms also needs to self-isolate, for 14 days from the day their illness started.

Messages sent by the service, which has been developed by NHS Digital and the NHS Business Services Authority, will come from "NHS Covid-19”.

They are available to anyone who registers their details with NHS 11 online, including age, mobile number and when symptoms began.

Professor Jonathan Benger, chief medical officer at NHS Digital, said: “This new service will help people to get the encouragement, advice and support that they need.”

Those who do not want to receive text messages can opt out at any time.
