Coronavirus: Pensioners may be told to avoid big public gatherings like VE Day celebrations

Pensioners could be advised to stay away from big public gatherings like the VE Day celebrations to avoid infection from coronavirus.

The elderly, in particular those over 80 years old, and those with underlying health conditions are most at risk from the disease.

The 75th anniversary of VE Day takes place on May 8th around the time that the coronavirus outbreak is starting to peak in the UK.

This advice could mean that hundreds of military veterans could miss out on parades and other events marking the end of WW2 in Europe as a result.

England's chief medical officer has warned that 1% of people who get the virus might end up dying, with older people more vulnerable.

A special plan to help care homes for the elderly to maintain supplies of food and medicines is being drafted.

Once the outbreak is approaching its peak, care homes could also be asked to limit visitors to keep their residents safe.
