The trailer for new pandemic thriller Songbird has been slammed online for being distaseteful.
The new film, which is produced by Transformers director Michael Bay, sees a host of characters as they struggle to survive amid a fourth year of lockdown due to the mutated Covid-19.
Set in a dystopian future not too far from our own, Songbird also focuses on a romance between virus-immune courier courier Nico ( Riverdale star KJ Apa) and Sara (Sofia Carson).
The trailer shows off the high drama by showing military on the streets and quarantine camps as the health horror continues, while vigilantes also run amuck on the streets.
Songbird also stars Demi Moore, Peter Stomare, Bradley Whitford, Alexandra Daddario, and Craig Robinson.
Despite the cast of big stars and relevant subject matter, many on social media fear it is a bit too soon for a film of its subject mater.
One person wrote on Twitter: "The last thing I want to watch in a pandemic, is a film about said pandemic and how it could get EVEN WORSE. I don’t need that stress. I don’t think anyone does. #SONGBIRDMOVIE ".
A different unamused Songbird trailer viewer penned: "Releasing a film about this pandemic while we're all still living in it is probably one of the most distasteful things I've seen in a while. It's too close to home, too close to our present fears. Some are so incredibly detached from reality. @Songbird #Songbird #SongbirdMovie ".
Meanwhile, another Twitter user commented: "Watching the #SongbirdMovie trailers and it might be entertaining...but eh...still not interested right now. Imo, as far as fiction chronicling a pandemic, #Contagion nailed it on so many fronts...and with an all-star cast. Still hard to believe it was made in 2011."
However, one person was a fan of the trailer, penning to Sofia Carson: "I can't wait to see #SONGBIRDMOVIE, it's impossible not to fall in love with every performance you do, you are incredibly amazing, I am proud of you, I am happy to be here supporting you, I love you so much".
Finally, a different person concluded: "The last thing I want to do is watch a movie that was inspired by the pandemic I am currently trying to survive #SongbirdMovie ".
Guess we may have to wait and see if this film is worth the controversy!
