A coronavirus outbreak has been declared at a Scots prison.
HMP Addiewell in West Lothian is at the centre of a wave of the bug with it now understood that prisoners are being confined to their cells to limit any spreading.
Sources told the Daily Record that the outbreak began around five days ago and now lags were going stir crazy inside with up to a dozen infections.
Other claims have been made that prisoners are being offered a poor choice of food and being not allowed access to phones- which has been denied by prison bosses.
One person said "I'm not happy at all my husband is currently in prison and getting treated like an absolute animal.
"All prisoners have been locked up for five days now not been allowed out to phoned loved ones- which gets some prisoners through the day.
"They're taking their dinners to the cells and by the time they get to everyone the food is stone cold.
"My husband hasn't eaten for 4 days now and I'm really worried for his mental and and others as well who all battle with health conditions."
Fraser Munro, Director at HMP Addiewell, said: “We continue to work closely with NHS Lothian colleagues to manage an outbreak of COVID-19, alongside support, advice and guidance from a Public Health Incident Management Team.
“Measures are in place to control the outbreak and reduce its impact on HMP Addiewell. To ensure family contact is maintained residents have access to prison issue phones, nutritious cooked meals continue to be provided and additional personal hygiene packs have been made available. Laundry services continue to function.”
