Coronavirus outbreak: Britons returning from northern Italy told to self-isolate

The Health Secretary has told Britons returning from northern Italy to self-isolate even if they don't have symptoms of coronavirus.

Matt Hancock gave the advice after Italy put several parts of Lomardy and Veneto on lockdown, where 50,000 residents have been told they can't leave without special permission for two weeks.

Mr Hancock told BBC Breakfast that people who have been abroad to northern Italy, north of Pisa, that they should self-isolate if they begin to have flu-like symptoms.

But he also said: "If people have been to the affected areas that the Italian Government have quarantined then they should self-isolate whether or not they have symptoms."

The quarantined zones in Italy have been placed into the same travel advice category as Wuhan city and Hubei Province in China.

As well as self-isolating, travellers should also call NHS 111 to inform them of their recent journeys.

In total there are 11 towns quarantined across Lombardy and Veneto where the Covid-19 outbreak suddenly emerged.

So far seven people died, the latest being an 80-year-old man in Milan.

It is the worst place in Europe currently affected by the disease.
