Coronavirus outbreak at Hamilton factory that makes cakes for Disney and Thorntons

A coronavirus cluster has been detected at a cake factory in Hamilton that supplies celebration cakes for major retailers, such as Disney and Thorntons.

Five employees were found to have tested positive for COVID-19.

Management at the Lightbody Firm in Hamilton have confirmed contact tracing is now underway to identify close contacts of those to have tested positive for the virus.

A "number" of employees are also now self-isolating as a result of the breakout.

The factory employs over 1,100 people and is the UK’s largest supplier of celebration cakes.

It has Disney, Universal, Weight Watchers and Thorntons cakes in its licenced portfolio, as well as own-label cake for supermarket retailers.

A spokesman said: "Lightbody can confirm that five employees have tested positive for COVID-19 whilst off shift.

"A comprehensive track and trace has been implemented and, as a precaution, a number of employees have been isolated for the government guided 14 day period.

"No members of staff are being told to come back to work before their own isolation period finishes.

“We would like to reassure all of our employees that we are taking this very seriously and that their health and safety is our top priority.

"We have taken all necessary precautionary measures, guided by government advice, on how to respond and continue to maintain our high standards of hygiene, PPE use and social distancing best practice.”
