Coronavirus outbreak at Greggs factory in Cambuslang forced over 30 staff to self-isolate

More than 30 workers at the Greggs factory in Cambuslang have had to self-isolate following a coronavirus outbreak at the depot.

The Westburn Drive facility was forced to temporarily close one of its production lines to carry out a deep clean after workers proved positive for the virus earlier this month.

The Reformer understands some of those affected were admitted to hospital as a result.

Health chiefs have said the incident is a reminder of how quickly the virus can spread.

Dr Cathy Johnman, NHS Lanarkshire consultant in public health medicine, said: “Positive Covid-19 cases have been identified at Greggs factory in Cambuslang. The individuals are currently self-isolating at home.

“NHS Lanarkshire’s Test and Protect team is continuing to identify contacts of cases and they are being given public health advice and being told to book a test and self-isolate, in keeping with current Scottish Government guidance.

“NHS Lanarkshire is working closely with Greggs and South Lanarkshire Council and a full risk assessment has been carried out to ensure all the recommended infection prevention and control measures are in place. It is vitally important we all follow Scottish Government guidance, especially in relation to FACTS.

“We wish to remind people of the key symptoms of Covid-19 – a new continuous cough, high temperature and/or loss of taste or smell. Anyone who develops any of these symptoms should book a test and self-isolate immediately.

“To respect and maintain confidentiality it is not possible to release any further information at this time.”

A spokesperson for Greggs said that the company followed all available measures to contain the outbreak.

A statement read: “We reopened the production line at our Cambuslang factory on February 9 following a deep clean of the site."
