Coronavirus outbreak plans launched in north and east Bristol as hospital admissions reach new high

Council chiefs have now activated their outbreak plans across north and east Bristol as infections remain worryingly high.

Last week, the same action was launched in south Bristol as cases continue to rise in some parts of the city.

It's also been confirmed that coronavirus hospital admissions are now at their highest since the pandemic first hit - with 404 Covid inpatients in Bristol's wards.

There's been outbreaks in 19 Bristol workplaces, almost a third (28 per cent) of the city's care homes and 18 per cent of schools.

Half (50 per cent) of Bristol infections are people aged between 30 to 59 as council chiefs confirm cases are increasing due to 'community transmission'.

A council spokesperson said: "Cases are still high across all areas of the city. Areas of South Bristol are currently seeing high case rates and public health teams have activated local outbreak plans to stem the spread of infection and support local residents.

"We are also activating plans in other areas in North and East Bristol where rates are high or rising due to community transmission."

Bristol’s rate of 451 new cases per 100,000 population (data from January 6 to January 12), is slightly lower than the previous seven days (538 new cases per 100,000).

This compare's to England's rate, which stands at 538.

The regional R number is estimated to lie within a range of 1.2 – 1.5 - the joint-highest in England.
