Coronavirus: Nurse who was left in tears over empty supermarkets speaks out on This Morning

The nurse who was left in tears over empty supermarket shelves has spoken out on This Morning, urging people to "help each other" in the coronavirus outbreak.

A video of critical care nurse Dawn Bilbrough, 51, went viral after she broke down crying following a 48-hour shift when she couldn't buy any fruit and vegetables.

Panic buyers have been stocking up on food as the country prepares to go into lockdown in the coronavirus crisis, with many joining enormous queues before supermarkets have even opened.

Speaking to Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes, Dawn, from Leeds, called on panic buyers to be more considerate of others.

She said: "I understand the fear but we are not a third world country. We can have food delivered; there are, as far as I'm aware, plenty of supplies of food.

"People need to have awareness when topping up their trolley and remember that other people need to survive this virus also, we all have needs and we all just need to share the load really."

Dawn added: "I hope some people just stop and think a little bit before filling up their trollies but time will tell.

"Let's group together, we can all get through this together and help each other and that means making sure we've all got enough supplies."

In the original video Dawn admits she had a "little cry" in the supermarket after seeing the fruit and vegetable shelves totally bare.

Fighting back tears, she said: "I don't know how I'm supposed to stay healthy. And those people... people are just stripping the shelves of basic foods. You just need to stop it.

"Because it's people like me that are going to be looking after you when you're at your lowest so just stop it. Please!"

Supermarkets have introduced tighter restrictions on opening hours and item limits in order to tackle the issue.

As well as fresh fruit and veg, Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda and Morrisons have been decimated of essential items such as toilet roll, handwash and pasta.
