Coronavirus: Nurse's heartbreaking plea after holding hands of four dying patients

A nurse has shared the heartbreaking story of how she held the hands of four coronavirus patients who died in the same day.

Gemma Louise said one of the victims was in their 40s, as she pleaded with people to stay inside.

She said watching people “deteriorate so quickly and having nothing left you can do” is the worst feeling.

In a post on Facebook, which has been shared nearly 80,000 times and seen more than 96,000 reactions, she said: "Today I held the hands of four patients as they sadly passed away from Covid-19.

"One of them was in their 40s. To say it was heartbreaking, doesn't even come close.

"Watching people deteriorate so quickly and having nothing left you can do to help them is the worst feeling.

"It breaks my heart that they can't spend their last moments with their families and that we have to break the news to their relatives over the phone.

"This virus is absolutely devastating. It attacks so many organs in the body and there is very little doctors can do but support people's breathing with oxygen and ventilation support."

Gemma expressed her anger at people who break social distancing rules.

"PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE stay at home this weekend," she added. "It angers me so much that people can't follow this simple command to keep themselves and their families safe.

"If we can risk our lives helping people and sweating for hours on end in PPE, then you can stay at home watching TV.

"I will be working this weekend but will look forward to celebrating the end with my family and friends when we make it through the other side of this horrible time."

It comes as the government confirms the UK lockdown will be extended for at least another three weeks.

Dominic Raab formally announced the extension at today's Downing Street press conference alongside chief scientific adviser Sir Patrick Vallance and chief medical officer Chris Whitty.

Mr Raab said relaxing the measures too early would put public health and the economy at risk as it could lead to a 'second peak' and another shutdown.

The three-week extension was announced earlier than expected when Wales' First Minister Mark Drakeford confirmed it shortly before the 5pm press conference at No. 10.

The Government has faced mounting pressure to reveal its lockdown exit strategy amid concerns the UK could face its worst recession in 300 years if the restrictions continue into the summer.

The UK death toll rose to 13,828 on Thursday afternoon after 870 more deaths were reported in the last 24 hours.
