Coronavirus: Number of UK cases jumps to 319 as Boris Johnson chairs emergency meeting

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the UK has risen by 46 - bringing the total to 319.

The Department of Health and Social Care confirmed the news at 2pm on Monday afternoon as part of their daily updates.

More than 24,960 people in the UK have now been tested for COVID-19.

In a tweet, the government said: "As of 9am 9 March 2020, a total of 24,960 people have been tested: 24,641 negative. 319 positive. 3 patients who tested positive for coronavirus have sadly died."

The latest update includes the first case of coronavirus in Herefordshire, Public Health England (PHE) in the West Midlands has said.

Monday's figures follow the news of a man aged 'over 60' diagnosed with coronavirus who died on Sunday evening at North Manchester General Hospital.

It was the third death in the UK of a patient with COVID-19.

Prime minister Boris Johnson chaired an emergency meeting to discuss the country's response to coronavirus on Monday.

The total number of cases in Greater Manchester stands at 20, with four new cases confirmed on Saturday night and one in Tameside and another in Bolton on Sunday.

Spanish health authorities are considering new Covid-19 containment measures after infections skyrocketed in two areas in the past few days.

Roughly half of the 904 infections in Spain were in the central region of Madrid, where infections have more than doubled in the past 24 hours, from 202 to 469.

Deaths in the region, where much of the contagion is being seen in nursing homes and amid health workers, also shot up from eight to 16 overnight, the Madrid regional health department announced on Monday.

The other big virus cluster in Spain is in the northern Basque country, where many infections have been tied to people who attended a funeral.

Meanwhile a maintenance worker at Disneyland Paris has tested positive for coronavirus, but the the theme park remains open.

A Disneyland Paris spokesman said: "We have been notified that a cast member, who works backstage and does not have contact with guests, has tested positive and is receiving treatment.

"We have been in regular contact with the local health authorities and continue to implement preventive measures in line with their recommendations to help protect our guests and cast members."
