Coronavirus Northern Ireland: West Belfast community to 'light up' for NHS workers

A West Belfast community will become illuminated on Saturday night in support of the NHS.

Residents in the St James' area will join together to show their appreciation to all the health workers who are caring for the pubic during the coronavirus crisis.

The 'Light up for the NHS' campaign will switch on tonight and will run for the duration of the Covid-19 lockdown.

The initiative - which is also being supported by St James Swifts Football Club - will see residents light up their gardens with outdoor lighting.

"It was just an idea between the Swifts and local residents to do something to brighten up or lighten up the mood of St James'," explained youth worker and Swifts presdent Damien Lindsay.

"We want to once again show our support to the NHS staff, many of whom live in our area.

"A lot of residents joined in Thursday's appreciation applause for the NHS, and this is a way of showing more support to the wonderful staff and health workers at this time."

Damien added: "We hope to keep this running until the lockdown ends.

"Over the next week or so we would like to see more people join the switch-on.

"We have Easter eggs for all the kids who help their parents light up. These will be sponsored by a few of the Swifts' players and supporters.

"We will be performing the initial 'light-up' on Saturday night at 7.30pm so hopefully everyone joins in."
