Coronavirus: Northern Ireland records 20 new cases as island total hits 1,054

There have been 20 new positive cases of the coronavirus in Northern Ireland.

The new figures were released the by the NI Department of Health on Monday afternoon.

A statement said: "As of 2pm on Monday 23 March, testing has resulted in 20 new positive cases, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in Northern Ireland to 148.

"To date two people who tested positive have sadly died.

"The total number of tests completed in Northern Ireland is 2,692.

"People with mild symptoms - new persistent cough and/or fever - should stay at home and self-isolate. They will not require testing and will not therefore be included in testing totals."

On Monday, Health Minister Robin Swann said social distancing could begin to be enforced in the coming days.

Mr Swann said people were “not seriously weighing up the seriousness of the situation we are currently in”.

With 906 cases in the Republic, this brings the island total to 1,054. So far, six people on the island of Ireland have died due to Covid-19.
