Coronavirus Northern Ireland: PSNI issue statement after reports of public attending Co Down beaches

The PSNI has today issued a statement following reports of members of the public visiting local 'beauty spots' in Co Down.

They appealed to the public to stay away from popular areas in the midst of the COVID-19 crisis.

Assistant Chief Constable Alan Todd said: "We have received reports of people visiting Tyrella and Murlough beaches, and Newcastle town in County Down today.

"The public should be well aware of the advice from our public health partners and the Government about social distancing and movement and, on that basis, we would encourage people not to drive to local beauty spots for their daily exercise as others may have the same idea and social distancing may not be achievable."

On Saturday, the PHA issued latest figures which said that as of 9.16am on Saturday 28 March, testing has resulted in 49 new positive cases of COVID-19, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in Northern Ireland to 324.

To date, 15 people who tested positive have sadly died in NI.
