Coronavirus Northern Ireland: NI Football League abandons pre-match handshakes

The Northern Ireland Football League has abandoned the pre-match ritual of players shaking hands before games due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Football officials have announced that the traditional 'fair play handshake' will not take place at this weekend's matches.

The suspension will remain in place until further notice.

The league said in a statement: "As a result of the ongoing concerns posed the by Coronavirus outbreak, as a precautionary measure, the fair play handshake between players and match officials will not take place at this weekend’s NI Football League matches and until further notice."

There are three reported cases of coronavirus in Northern Ireland, and a further 13 in the Republic of Ireland.

It is understood that the NI Football League is being guided by the public health authority on the outbreak and will communicate to clubs as the situation dictates.
