Coronavirus Northern Ireland: More than 250 new Covid-19 cases recorded in last 24 hours

The Department of Health has reported a further two coronavirus related deaths.

According to the latest update the fatalities occurred within the current reporting period.

The death toll in Northern Ireland now stands at 2,043, according to the DoH.

Wednesday's dashboard update also reports a further 260 positive cases of Covid-19, bringing the total number of positive cases to 111,651 since the start of the pandemic.

Over the past seven days, the Department says 1,884 individuals have tested positive in Northern Ireland.

There are currently 356 Covid-19 confirmed patients in hospital and 44 in intensive care.

Meanwhile, three people in Northern Ireland are confirmed to have the South African variant of coronavirus, it was revealed by health chiefs on Tuesday.

The confirmed cases, are the first to be detected in the province.

Department of Health say a detailed health protection risk assessment and contact tracing response has been deployed.

They added that the risk of transmission is judged to be low at this time and that they are working closely with the Public Health Agency and the Regional Virology Laboratory in relation to the investigation and assessment of these cases.
