Coronavirus Northern Ireland: Four further Covid-19 related deaths recorded by DoH

The Department of Health has reported a further four coronavirus related deaths.

According to the latest update, all of the fatalities are said to have occurred within the current reporting period.

The death toll in Northern Ireland now stands at 1,957, according to the DoH.

Wednesday's dashboard update also reports a further 336 positive cases of the virus, bringing the total number of positive cases to 107,774 since the start of the pandemic.

Over the past seven days, the Department says 2,596 individuals have tested positive in Northern Ireland.

There are currently 544 Covid-19 confirmed patients in hospital and 61 in intensive care.

Meanwhile, it will be early next year before life in Northern Ireland returns to relative normality, the Chief Medical Officer said.

From 70% to 80% of the population will need to be vaccinated with two doses.

Some 16% of those most vulnerable to Covid-19 have received a first jab so far.

The new variants would spread like a "finely-tuned sports car" if restrictions were eased too quickly, Dr Michael McBride added.

He said: "I think we will have restrictions in place next autumn and winter."
