Coronavirus: Northern Ireland eases lockdown to let groups of up to six people meet up outside

Northern Ireland has gone further than Wales by relaxing more of its lockdown rules.

Stormont First Minister Arlene Foster has said that groups of up to six people are now able to meet up outside.

She also confirmed places of worship can reopen in Northern Ireland for individual prayer provided people can socially distance.

Measures included:

  • Allowing drive-in religious services as long as people remain in their cars;
  • Cinemas, concerts and live theatre with audiences staying in their vehicles;
  • Golfers can return to fairways;
  • Outdoor gatherings of up to six people from outside the same household;
  • Still no indoor gatherings of family members.

She said that though people would be "disappointed", Northern Irish residents would not be allowed to meet inside

First Minister Mrs Foster said they were also considering small weddings.

She said the health advice was that the virus spread more easily indoors than outdoors.

"The relaxations I have announced have been made possible by the vast majority of you faithfully following the public health advice on self-isolation ... and social distancing."

She added: "They have been hard-won freedoms.

"It is vital that when you exercise those you do it in a way that does not put anyone else's safety at risk."

In Wales people are not allowed to arrange to meet people from other households when out exercising.

The lifting of restrictions in further than any of the UK nations has gone as all four administrations try to keep the R value below one. First Minister of Wales Mark Drakeford has previously called for the UK nations to move forward together where possible.

For the past 10 days people in Wales have been allowed to exercise multiple times a day and councils have begun the process of opening libraries and recycling centres where possible.
