The Department of Health has reported a further 16 deaths linked to coronavirus.

Their figures now show the virus death toll stands at 1,476, as of Monday morning.

Of the latest 16 fatalities reported by the Department, 15 sadly occurred in the last 24 hours, and one death happened outside of this reporting period.

Monday's dashboard data also shows a daily rise in positive cases of the virus by 759 in the last 24 hours.

The total number of individuals who have tested positive for the virus since the beginning of the pandemic is 89,459.

And in the last seven days, a total of 9,591 have tested positive for Covid-19.

There are currently 52 patients with coronavirus in Intensive Care Units, as of this morning.

Meanwhile, the Chief Medical Officer has issued a plea to the public to adhere to restrictions as hospital admissions rise daily.

He said: "This is the most serious time we have faced to date. Our health service will face extreme pressures, sadly. Over the coming weeks we will see increased numbers of people dying.

"We said there will always be a payback to the relaxations of restrictions over Christmas. It was inevitable this would translate into where we are now."
