Coronavirus Northern Ireland: Department of Health reports 12 further deaths linked to Covid-19

The Department of Health has reported a further 12 deaths linked to Covid-19 in Northern Ireland.

Saturday's dashboard update shows the coronavirus death toll to stand at 1,716 as of 10am on January 23.

And this new data reports a rise in positive cases of the virus by 670 in the last 24 hours.

A total of 99,886 individuals have tested positive for the virus since the start of the pandemic.

The Department's dashboard also shows that in the last seven days, a total of 5,355 new cases of coronavirus have been detected.

And the number of coronavirus patients in ICU wards across Northern Ireland is currently 66.

Meanwhile, on Thursday the Northern Ireland Executive announced an extension of the currently lockdown.

Speaking after the Executive's four-week review of the latest six-week restrictions, it was announced that measures would not end on February 6 as was originally planned.

Instead, the current lockdown will be extended until March 5, with a review of this expected at the end of February.

Arlene Foster said: "The Executive today [Thursday] has reviewed the current restrictions and has agreed that they remain and appropriate and necessary response to the serious and imminent threat posed by Covid-19, and following a detailed outlining from Health highlighting the continuing pressures on our hospitals and ICU departments and the emergence of the highly transmissible variants, the Executive has agreed that the current restrictions will be extended for a further four weeks until March 5. The restrictions will be reviewed on or before February 18."
