Coronavirus Northern Ireland: 22 further Covid-19 deaths recorded by Department of Health

The Department of Health has reported a further 22 coronavirus related deaths.

According to the latest update, 18 of the fatalities are said to have occurred within the current reporting period, and four outside of it.

The death toll in Northern Ireland now stands at 1,814, according to the DoH.

Friday's dashboard update reports a further 669 positive cases of the virus, bringing the total number of positive cases to 103,079 since the start of the pandemic.

Over the past seven days, the Department says 3,991 individuals have tested positive in Northern Ireland.

There are currently 745 Covid-19 confirmed patients in hospital and 67 in intensive care.

Meanwhile, the Northern Ireland Executive has agreed to extend the closure of schools as part of new measures to combat Covid-19.

First Minister Arlene Foster and Deputy First Minister Michelle O'Neill made the announcement at a press conference on Thursday, with the Education Minister saying he aims for a return to face-to- face learning in March.

The school closure extension to March 5 would see the schools reopen as other lockdown measures are due to be lifted, such as the closure of non-essential retail, hospitality premises and close contact services.

The First and Deputy First Minister said they wanted to inform teachers and parents of the new arrangements in good time and said they understood their disappointment that remote learning will continue after the mid-term holiday.
