Coronavirus Northern Ireland: 17 further Covid-19 deaths recorded by Department of Health

The Department of Health has reported a further 17 coronavirus related deaths.

According to the latest update, 13 of the fatalities are said to have occurred within the current reporting period, and four outside of it.

The death toll in Northern Ireland now stands at 1,831, according to the latest DoH statistics.

Saturday's dashboard update also reports a further 669 positive cases of the virus, bringing the total number of positive cases to 103,534 since the start of the pandemic.

Over the past seven days, the Department says 3,841 individuals have tested positive in Northern Ireland.

There are currently 713 Covid-19 confirmed patients in hospital and 69 in intensive care.

Meanwhile, concern about potential vaccine shortages in Europe sparked a row that almost saw Article 16 of the Brexit withdrawal agreement triggered on Friday in a bid to prevent Northern Ireland being used as a back door to funnel coronavirus jabs from the bloc into the rest of the UK.

The withdrawal agreement normally allows for free movement of goods from the EU into Northern Ireland and had Article 16 protocol been put in place, it would have meant export controls in respect of vaccines crossing the border between RoI and NI.

A furious reaction both north and south of the border saw the EU row back on the plan.

In other coronavirus related developments, the Northern Ireland Executive has agreed to extend the closure of schools as part of new measures to combat Covid-19.

First Minister Arlene Foster and Deputy First Minister Michelle O'Neill made the announcement at a press conference on Thursday, with the Education Minister saying he aims for a return to face-to- face learning in March.

The school closure extension to March 5 would see the schools reopen as other lockdown measures are due to be lifted, such as the closure of non-essential retail, hospitality premises and close contact services.
