Coronavirus Northern Ireland: 16 further Covid-19 deaths recorded by Department of Health

The Department of Health has reported a further 16 coronavirus related deaths.

According to the latest update, 15 of the fatalities are said to have occurred within the current reporting period, and one outside of it.

The death toll in Northern Ireland now stands at 1,915, according to the DoH.

Friday's dashboard update reports a further 506 positive cases of the virus, bringing the total number of positive cases to 106,143 since the start of the pandemic.

Over the past seven days, the Department says 3,203 individuals have tested positive in Northern Ireland.

There are currently 636 Covid-19 confirmed patients in hospital and 67 in intensive care.

Meanwhile, on Thursday evening First Minister Arlene Foster said the current lockdown has made a "major difference" in efforts to suppress the virus.

"In real terms, this means that many thousands of people have been protected from this deadly virus, some of whom would have not survived contact," she added.

Health Minister Robin Swann previously warned that the "pandemic is far from over", but added that "Northern Ireland can and will get though this".
