Coronavirus Northern Ireland: 12 further deaths reported by Department of Health

There have been 12 further Covid-19 deaths reported with nine of these taking place in the previous 24 hours, according to the Department of Health.

The department's daily dashboard says a further 391 people have tested positive for the virus, with 2,482 infections in the past week.

The death toll in Northern Ireland now stands at 974 since the pandemic began, according to the DoH.

Belfast saw the most new infections in the past 24 hours, with 54, followed by Mid Ulster with 50 and Causeway Coast and Glens with 39.

Seven council areas had more than 30 positive tests.

Belfast has seen the most new infections in the past seven days with 421, followed by Mid Ulster with 284 and Derry City and Strabane with 279.

There are currently 425 inpatients in hospital with Covid-19.

Today marks the first day of new Covid-19 restrictions coming into force, which will see  the close of non-essential retail, gyms, leisure facilities and close contact services.

The closure for hospitality businesses has also been extended for another two weeks, with the restrictions due to be lifted on December 11.
