Coronavirus: North West 200 Meet the Stars launch event postponed

North West 200 organisers have postponed next week's 'Meet the Stars' event amid concerns over the ongoing coronavirus outbreak.

The popular event was due to be held at the Lodge Hotel in Coleraine next Wednesday night, March 18.

A number of bike stars were expected to attend including Glenn Irwin, Davey Todd and Alastair Seeley.

Organisers said they hoped to rearrange that for a later date.

In a statement, they said: “In the light of the current public concern around Coronavirus, the organisers of the 2020 fonaCAB and Nicholl Oils North West 200 have decided to postpone the Meet the Stars of the North West 200 event scheduled for March 18 in the Lodge Hotel, Coleraine."

Meanwhile, organisers say there are no plans “at this time” to cancel this year’s Race Week.

The 2020 North West 200 is scheduled to run from May 10-16.

Earlier this week organisers said they will continue taking advice from health officials over the threat of coronavirus.

"The organisers will attend a special briefing with public health officials, including the Chief Medical Officer of Northern Ireland, on Monday, March 16, to seek further advice and information as we continue to plan for North West 200 Race Week on May 10-16," added the statement.

"There are no plans to cancel Race Week at this time.

"Hopefully following Monday’s meeting further information will be issued re rescheduling of the Meet the Stars event during the coming weeks.”
