Coronavirus NI: Robin Swann says now is not the right time to reintroduce restrictions across Northern Ireland

Health Minister Robin Swann has said that despite increasing cases of Covid-19 across Northern Ireland, now is not the right time to impose tighter restrictions.

He said that the NI vaccination programme had been “re-energised” following the Big Jab Weekend initiative at the SSE Arena where it is believed that at least 8,000 vaccinations were delivered.

The Health Minister told BBC NI: "I don't think we are at that point yet about putting more restrictions back in.

"The Executive meets again in the first week in September in regards to what's still in place and what we'll look at in regards to the next steps, and that's where that decision will be made."

Northern Ireland currently has the highest infection rate in the UK and the lowest vaccination rates.

On Sunday, the Department of Health reported eleven coronavirus-related deaths and another 1,485 positive cases of the virus.

Chief Medical Officer Sir Michael McBride added: "I suspect it's somewhere in the region of between 8,000 and 10,000 people.

"It's a huge achievement and I want to thank every single person."

Bangor teenager Danielle McElroy, 17, was given the last jab at the SSE Arena as part of the Big Jab Weekend push.

She said: “I just wanted to do my part in helping everyone get through this. It has really affected school and everyone’s lifestyle.

“I just want to get back to normality and I think this is the step to do that and it keeps everybody safe as well. I’m excited and happy I’ve got it.”
