Coronavirus NI: PSNI statement as arrests made following City Hall 'anti-lockdown' protest

Two people were arrested and a number of fixed penalty notices were issued following a protest in Belfast this afternoon.

It is understood the demonstration took place outside City Hall in opposition to Covid-19 lockdowns.

Chief Inspector Christian Bradley said: “Police engaged with the protesters at City Hall today in an attempt to encourage them to comply with the Health Protection Regulations however unfortunately they chose to breach the regulations.

“Officers therefore issued a number of fixed penalty notices and two people were arrested.

“We always work with organisers and protesters to facilitate lawful and peaceful protests, however, these are not ordinary times.

"The Health Protection Regulations, particularly at this time with increased restrictions in place, are there to protect us all during this pandemic and it is everyone’s responsibility to adhere to them to protect our society.”

It comes as Health Minister Robin Swann urged everyone across Northern Ireland to focus all their energies on fighting the Covid-19 threat as we countdown to Christmas.

In a statement issued on Friday evening he says “what better gift” is there than giving each other the “prospect of more time with each other in the future”.

Minister Swann added that pushing down coronavirus infection rates and saving lives has to remain our top priority.

“That is something we can all unite behind in the days and weeks ahead. I would urge everyone to please play your part in stopping the virus spreading,” he said.
