Coronavirus NI latest figures show 25 deaths in last 48 hours

A further 26 people have sadly lost their lives having contracted Covid-19.

According to the latest dashboard update from the Department of Health, 25 deaths occurred in the last 48 hours reporting period, from December 31 to January 2. A further death was also recorded outside of this period.

The number of positive cases detected here has once again risen with 3,576 cases reported in the last 48 hour period.

In the last seven days, 10,850 people have tested positive for Coronavirus in Northern Ireland.

At present there are 35 patients in ICU here with Covid-19, 25 of those patients are on ventilators.

The latest statistics come as Northern Ireland's current Covid-19 restrictions have eased slightly with the 8pm curfew no longer in place, but the public are being urged to abide by the rules.

SDLP Health spokesperson, MLA Cara Hunter, said the past few days have shown how serious the pandemic is and that the health serious could be put under serious pressure over the next week.

She said: "We have seen a large increase in cases with over 2,000 on the 30th and 1,929 yesterday, along with 11 deaths.

"We are seeing how serious the pandemic has become and we need everyone to follow the advice. Only go out or travel for essential purposes and try to take a sense of personal responsibility.

"While we do have some light at the end of the tunnel with the vaccine, its roll out will still take some time and we need to do all that we can to stop the spread of this virus.

"It is disheartening to see images on social media of house parties and things on social media and people need to realise they are not invincible. I know it is tough but people need to take a step back and understand that their decisions have an impact on everyone around them."
