Coronavirus: NHS nurse and her identical twin sister die just days apart

Two identical twin sisters have died within three days from coronavirus, their family has said.

On Tuesday, NHS children's nurse Katy Davis, 38, died at Southampton General Hospital where she worked.

Her twin sister Emma, a former nurse, died earlier on Friday at the same hospital.

Their sister Zoe paid tribute to the twins, who lived together and had health conditions.

She said: "They always said they had come into the world together and would go out together as well.

"There are no words to describe how special they were."

In a statement, University Hospital Southampton described Katy as "a nurse people would aspire to be like.

"University Hospital Southampton has today confirmed the death of a member of staff, Katy Davis, aged 38, who had tested positive for coronavirus (Covid-19) on admission to hospital.

"Katy had an underlying health condition and had been unwell for some time prior to her admission. She sadly died on the evening of Tuesday April 21 at Southampton General Hospital."

Paula Head, chief executive at UHS, said: “I want to pay tribute to Katy who sadly passed away on Tuesday. Katy has been described by her colleagues where she worked in child health as a nurse people would aspire to be like and that nursing was more than just a job to her.

“On behalf of everyone here at UHS, including our patients and the communities we serve, I would like to offer our sincere condolences to her family.”

More than 100 health and care workers in the UK have died after contracting coronavirus, according to sobering new figures.

It comes amid growing concern over a lack of personal protective equipment (PPE) for staff on the front line of the fight against Covid-19.

Nursing Notes, a platform run by nurses, said the true figure is likely to be higher.

Not all deaths are currently in the public domain, it added.

It comes as the UK death toll surpassed 19,000 on Friday following another 776 fatalities.

England's hospital death toll increased by 587, taking the total number of deaths up to 17,373 from 16,786 the previous day.

Patients whose deaths were recorded in the latest daily figures were aged between 40 and 102 years old, NHS England has said.

34 of the 587 patients (aged between 50 and 102 years old) had no known underlying health condition.

The death toll in Wales hit 751 after 110 new deaths were reported today, with 8,601 people now infected with the disease after 243 new cases confirmed.

Scotland recorded 64 new deaths, taking the total to 1,184, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said.

In Northern Ireland, another 15 people have died from coronavirus, taking the total in the region to 278.
