Coronavirus: NHS doctor who worked on Syria front line says 'UK may be worse'

A doctor from the NHS who worked on the front line in Syria has revealed: “It could get worse here.”

Dr Saleyha Ahsan saw the horrors of the Middle East while working as a humanitarian medic.

She told the Sunday Mirror: “Syria was scary with bombs going off outside. Libya was daunting as I was by myself.

“But right here, in this current climate, is the scariest place I’ve ever worked.

"Right now is when I’ve felt the most afraid because I’m worried about family colleagues and friends.

“It’s because this is home. There’s no plane out of here. That’s very scary.”

Dr Ahsan, from London, slammed PM Boris Johnson ’s slow response to the virus – saying it had cost lives.

She said: “In that first week there was a window and the UK Government went in a totally different direction to the rest of the world.

“It was about buying time for the NHS and a vaccine and they didn’t take it.

Other countries were warning us and we didn’t listen. And we will pay the penalty with lives.

“I don’t want the public to be scared but a dose of reality is their best protection.”

  • Dr Ahsan is on Dispatches: Can Our NHS Cope? tomorrow at 8.30pm on Channel 4.
