Coronavirus news update: More than 50 people in Ireland under 45 admitted to ICU with Covid-19

More than 50 people under the age of 45 have been in a critical condition after contracting Covid-19.

Two children aged between five and 14 are the country's youngest patients to be admitted to an ICU.

And five people between the ages of 15 and 24 have been fighting for their lives after being diagnosed with the deadly disease.

This is according to the 383 Irish cases admitted to a critical care facility prior to midnight on Friday.

A report by the Health Protection Surveillance Centre also showed 14 patients in the 25-34 age bracket have been admitted to intensive care.

A further 32 people aged between 35-44 have also battled the virus in an ICU.

However, the HPSC report does not state the exact age, gender or the location of the patients.

It also doesn't say whether the person had an underlying condition or not.

A 17-year-old and a 23-year-old are the ages of the country's youngest people to die from the disease.

Meanwhile, 12 more people have died from coronavirus in the Republic of Ireland, bringing the death toll to 1,458.

The Department of Health announced the figures on Sunday, as 236 new cases brought the total number of infections to 22,996.
