Coronavirus news update: Covid-19 claims more lives in Northern Ireland as island death toll hits 247

Three more people have died from the coronavirus in Ireland bringing the death toll on the island to 247.

The new deaths were announced in Northern Ireland, which takes the total number of deaths there to 73.

The latest figures were released by the Public Health Agency on Tuesday afternoon.

Since Monday, a further 97 positive cases of the virus have also been confirmed taking the total number of cases in the North to 1,255.

This is on top of 174 coronavirus related deaths and 5,364 cases of the bug confirmed in the Republic of Ireland.

The NI Department for Health had previously said they expect a peak in the first wave of  Covid-19 in between April 6 and April 20.

Meanwhile, the latest figures in the Republic are due to be announced by the Department of Health at 5.30pm.

Dr Tony Holohan, Chief Medical Officer, Dr Ronan Glynn, Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Department of Health and Dr Cillian De Gascun, Director of the National Virus Reference Laboratory will attend the press briefing.
