Coronavirus news: Number of people hospitalised with Covid-19 in Ireland jumps by 14%

The number of patients in hospital with either confirmed or suspected coronavirus has risen to 648, new figures show.

The data recorded as of Monday night represents a 14% jump - 79 patients - compared with Sunday evening.

The number of confirmed hospitalised cases only rose by one to 376, but there was a big increase in the amount of suspected cases being treated in hospitals.

St James's, the Mater and Tallaght were treating the most confirmed patients with 52, 49, and 48 respectively.

Beaumont followed with 34, Limerick had 26 and St Vincent's were treating 25 cases.

In terms of people with suspected Covid-19, there were 43 in St James's and 39 in Limerick as of 8pm on Monday.

The number of patients with the virus in an ICU increased slightly to 55, while 29 suspected cases were also receiving critical care.

There were 39 ventilated cases across the country at the same time.

The HSE says there were 141 free critical care beds on Monday night.

Meanwhile, a further four people have died and there are 88 new cases of coronavirus in Ireland, it was announced on Monday evening.

The news brought the death toll here to 1,547.

There have now been 24,200 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the Republic.

The new cases were notified as of 11am on Monday, May 18.
