Coronavirus news: Number of Ireland's ICU cases now less than half of what they were at end of March

The number of people fighting for their lives after contracting the coronavirus is less than half of what is was at the end of March.

The latest HSE reports shows that 49 people with the virus are in an Intensive Care Unit.

This figure is down significantly from the peak of 160 which was recorded on April 9.

And there were five fewer patients in a critical condition by 8pm on Wednesday, compared with 24 hours prior to that.

The Health Minister on Thursday morning acknowledged the declining critical cases and urged the public to continue to follow the guidelines.

Simon Harris said: "Number of #Covid19 patients in ICUs across Irish hospitals has reduced further today to 49. We think of all 49 patients and their families.

"Please get well soon. For all of us, let’s keep following the public health advice so the numbers being admitted to ICU continues to reduce."

There are a further 21 people in intensive care with suspected Covid-19.

As of Wednesday night, there were 574 people being treated in hospital for the virus - 313 confirmed and 261 suspected cases.

That number is down from 649 the night previous.

Mr Harris added: "Ireland is making progress in our national effort against #Covid19.

"We need to keep at it. But we can help each other.

"It’s such a tough time for everyone so let’s decide today to reach out to one person, show them a random act of kindness.

"Could mean the world to them. Stay safe."
