
The European Commission is launching legal action against AstraZeneca over what it claims is the company’s failure to deliver adequate supplies of its coronavirus vaccine to the EU.
A spokesperson for the bloc said: “The Commission has started legal action against the company AstraZeneca on the basis of breaches of the advance purchase agreement.”
However, the pharmaceutical giant has pledged to fight the case, arguing that the EU’s claim is “without merit”.
It came as defence secretary Ben Wallace said that the UK would “do everything we can” to alleviate the suffering in India amid the country’s record Covid surge.
Meanwhile, cafes, beer gardens and museums are reopening today in Scotland as the country moves from Level 4 to Level 3 of its government’s five tier system of lockdown restrictions.
First minister Nicola Sturgeon announced last week that the success of the vaccine rollout and low numbers of Covid-19 cases across the UK meant that some restrictions could be lifted this week.
