
The UK public has taken part in a candlelight vigil on their doorsteps to commemorate Covid victims on the one-year anniversary of the first coronavirus lockdown.
It comes after a minute’s silence was held across the nation at 12pm earlier on Tuesday.
The prime minister told a Downing Street coronavirus briefing today that the UK is “step by step, jab by jab” on the path to “reclaiming our freedoms”.
Boris Johnson said the government is on track to meet its target to offer a first dose to everyone over the age of 50 by the middle of April, as well as to those under 50 who are clinically vulnerable.
The government also aims to offer a first dose of a vaccine to every adult by the end of July.
However, England’s chief medical officer Professor Chris Whitty warned that the chances of eradicating Covid-19 in the UK or around the world are “as close to zero as makes no difference”, adding that Covid-19 will remain a threat for the foreseeable future.
