Coronavirus news: All the graphs which show where Ireland is in attempt to flatten the curve

Despite the death toll continuing to gradually rise, there have been positive signs that show how well Ireland has done it its attempt to flatten the curve.

Lockdown restrictions introduced in March have helped stop the spread of the coronavirus across the country.

And the latest graphs released by the HSE show drop off in a number of key areas such as new daily cases, ICU admissions and number of those awaiting results in hospitals.

These will all be positives when it comes to the first phase of lifting restrictions on May 18.

Ireland is currently reporting a daily growth new cases of around 1%, down from an average of 30% in mid-March.

The graph showing the total number of confirmed cases is starting to level out, and the flatter it goes the better.

At the start of this outbreak, there were widespread fears that the country's Intensive Care Unit facilities could be overrun with patients.

However, the latest figures show that 72 Covid-19 patients are in critical care, down 55% from the peak of 160 in early April.

There are now 161 vacant ICU beds in Ireland. And the number of suspected cases in intensive care is half the amount it was at its peak.

At the end of March, there was about 850 people awaiting a swab results across the country's 29 hospitals - a figure that now stands at just 196.

There's no doubt that there is a long way to go, but the signs are looking good as we approach May 18.

Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan reminded the Irish public on Sunday morning to keep the fight up until the "final whistle blows".

He said: "All good teams keep going until the very end.

"They know the risks of easing off when the end is in sight.

"We’ve done so well this far - but it’s not full time yet!

"Come on Team Ireland - let’s keep the effort up until the final whistle blows."
