Coronavirus: Newport put into local lockdown as cases rise

Newport is being put into local lockdown by the Welsh Government as coronavirus infection rates remain high.

Newport is one of four more areas of Wales along with Bridgend, Blaenau Gwent, and Merthyr Tydfil council areas that will all be subject to local lockdowns which will begin at at 6pm on Tuesday, September 2.

Follow latest live updates on the announcement, which affect more than 420,000 people, here.

The new rules mean that people in Newport:

  • Must wear a face covering in shops if they are aged over 11.
  • Can no longer meet with people from other households indoors. Extended households will not be allowed and overnight stays will be banned.
  • Cannot enter or leave the borough council area without a "reasonable excuse". This includes work, if people are unable to work from home, as well as making a compassionate visit to a loved one or to provide care.
  • Can only meet others outdoors.

All licensed premises will close at 11pm in these areas and that rule will also come into force in Caerphilly as an additional element of the ongoing restrictions there.

Speaking at Monday's Welsh Government press briefing, Health Minister Vaughan Gething said: "In Newport, the rise in cases appeared to start with a house party at the end of August and was subsequently linked to a number of pubs.

"But we are now seeing a wide spread of cases across the city, which are not linked to a particular cluster or showing links with existing cases."

The area currently has a rate of 45 infections for every 100,000 people, according to the latest data from Public Health Wales.

It's not known yet how long the lockdowns will be in place but ahead of the Caerphilly lockdown coming into effect Welsh Government health minister Vaughan Gething said that the new restrictions would last until October "at the very least".

It is understood these new restrictions will be formally reviewed in two weeks time.
