Coronavirus: Newport by-election could still be cancelled as Welsh Government puts election 'under review'

The by-election scheduled for next month in Newport is now “under review,” the Welsh Government has said.

A by-election was scheduled for April 16 following the resignation of Victoria ward councillor Christine Jenkins of the Labour Party.

However, questions were raised over whether the by-election would go ahead following the UK Government’s announcement to postpone the May elections, which include the Gwent Police and Crime Commissioner election.

However, the Welsh Government has said they are “keeping the situation regarding by-elections under review.”

Cllr Jenkins has been in her role since 2012 and has resigned due to health reasons.

The last council election in 2017 saw 31 Labour councillors elected, achieving 62 per cent of seats.

The Conservatives currently hold 24 per cent of seats, with the remainder being held by the Liberal Democrats, Newport Independents, and an independent candidate.

Residents in the Victoria ward, which covers the area around Maindee, are also represented by Labour councillor Abdul-Majid Rahman.

Nominations for the election had to be submitted by Wednesday (March 11), with candidate announcements expected on March 19.following the resignation of Victoria ward councillor Christine Jenkins of the Labour Party
