Coronavirus: new powers for Police Scotland to enforce social distancing in workplaces

In today's daily briefing (Tuesday 21 April) First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced that coronavirus regulations had been amended, with police given additional powers to ensure all non-furloughed, non-home workers were staying two metres apart in their workplace.

She said: "We've today amended regulations introduced three weeks ago to restrict public gatherings and non essential business activities," before stating that one of these strengthened regulations relates to workplaces.

Ms Sturgeon added: "All businesses must make all reasonable measures to enforce the rule that workers are at least two metres apart from each other.

"Police will now be able to enforce that power within workplaces, though as with the regulations already in place we envisage this will primarily be done by dialogue and encouragement, we do not expect police to be routinely patrolling office blocks."

She also confirmed that livestock markets can continue and so can money advice services. She added that it was permitted for accommodation services can take bookings for future dates but that it's "not yet possible to say when such establishments will be allowed to reopen."
