Coronavirus: National Trust keeping parks open for free for social distancing

The National Trust has announced that it will keep a number of its gardens and parks open amidst the coronavirus pandemic, for people who practice social distancing.

The pandemic has seen the government advise the nation to work from home and avoid gatherings, and it can be easy to feel cooped up or wanting fresh air.

To help out, the National Trust will keep a number of its wide open spaces available for public use.

A statement on its Twitter page explained: "We're aiming to open many of our gardens and parks for free during this difficult time, so the nation can use open spaces to relax and refresh, while following the government’s social distancing guidance. We will be closing our houses, cafés and shops this week."

However, it's worth noting that not all properties will be open, so make sure to check the individual listing on the National Trust website before you set off.

If you do head out, make sure to follow the government's guidance on social distancing.

It's only the gardens and parks which will be open; the National Trust announced that it plans to close all of its houses, cafés and shops by Friday 20th March.

Hilary McGrady, National Trust's Director-General, said: “The National Trust was founded 125 years ago for the benefit of the entire nation.

"We want to honour our mission – to enable people and nature to thrive. Over the coming weeks we will do all that we can to keep on providing public benefit through caring for places and giving people access wherever possible.

"While we will close our indoor areas to help fight the spread of coronavirus, we recognise that people are likely to need access to open space."
