Coronavirus: Napoli to return to training despite senior advice in Italy

Napoli are set to ignore advice and return to training next week despite the coronavirus pandemic in Italy.

The Covid-19 outbreak has hit Italy more than any other nation worldwide with the country's northern regions especially affected.

Serie A initially went behind closed doors in an effort to contain the disease but then cancelled all sport on March 9.

The coronavirus has killed 4032 people in Italy and Damiano Tommasi, president of the Italian Players' Union, has said it would be dangerous if Napoli's players reconvened.

But they are set to ignore advice and begin training on Wednesday - two days after fellow Serie A side Cagliari.

"SSC Napoli announces that the team will resume training at the Technical Center on Wednesday 25 March with a morning session." the club stated on Friday.

Lazio, who are challenging Juventus for the title, are also considering a return.

Two of the Bianconeri's players, Blaise Matuidi and Daniel Ruggani, have tested positive for coronavirus.

Yet despite this and the continued affect of Covid-19 the country's Minister of Sport Vincenzo Spadafora is targeting May 3 return date.

"Serie A can resume on May 3, that's what we hope for," he told TG1. "Then we will evaluate whether it can be with the doors to the stadiums opened or closed.

The current Serie A campaign has 12 matchdays remaining before it concludes.

The Premier League is hoping to return on April 30 while the FA Cup is also down to the quarter-final stage with European competitions also needing to be concluded.

Euro 2020, which was due to have its opening game in the Italian capital, has been postponed for a year.

That will allow countries around Europe to finish off their domestic seasons while allowing time for the Champions League and Europa League to also play out.
