Coronavirus: Nan with dementia who only eats McDonald’s is saved by staff amid closure

The family of an 89-year-old gran with dementia who will only eat McDonald’s have ensured she won’t go without.

Eva Gilland only “happily” eats a McDonald’s hamburger, fries and Coca Cola but the fast food giant announced  it would be closing all its stores “until further notice” due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The pensioner’s family became worried they’d be unable to get her to eat, reports  Liverpool Echo.

But they came up with the idea of making Ms Gilland a homemade hamburger and fries and wrapping it in McDonald’s packaging instead.

And the gran loves it.

Ms Gilland’s granddaughter Natalie Pickersgill, from Wavertree, Liverpool, said: “She has carers going on a daily [basis] to help her with medication, but she is now at the stage of not eating much and for that couple of months her weight has dropped to 5st 5lbs.

“The only food she will happily eat is a McDonald’s hamburger, fries and coke.

"We have bought bottles of coke in order to keep her hydrated, but when we heard McDonald’s was closing I panicked realising I wouldn’t be able to get her to eat.”

Natalie, 37, took to social media to ask for spare McDonald’s wrappers, and was overwhelmed with the amount of messages she received.

McDonald’s workers across Liverpool helped as their restaurants closed.

"People were amazing, offering to help and we managed to get help,” Natalie said.

"Three different managers contacted me to say we could use the wrappers free of charge.

“Everybody has their own personal issues with all that’s going on and with coronavirus, whether that’s with employment or child care, so it’s the fact that people took time out their lives to help.

“We knew it would be such a worrying time for us.

“I would personally like to thank Tom Carroll from Stondale McDonald’s, Heather and Ollie from Lord Street McDonald’s and Nicola and Claire from Rangleigh Street McDonald’s for their generous gifts of packaging, and to all those who spent time out of their busy day to message or seek packaging for us.”
