Coronavirus: Morrisons, Asda, Lidl and Aldi ease products restrictions on essentials

Following shoppers' panic buying spree that lasted a number of weeks, supermarkets across the UK were forced to place strict limitations on products.

This included the likes of toilet roll and hand sanitizer, which were subsequently limited to two per customer after selling-out in stores across the country - well before lockdown was even announced.

But supermarkets are now easing restrictions on essential products, with Aldi, Asda, Morrisons, Lidl and Waitrose having all relaxed purchasing policies, reports Daily Record.

As stocks of essentials begin to return to normal, this is how restrictions are changing in these stores:

Aldi

Aldi is one the stores that is changing up the rules for shoppers.

Customers can now buy four items - including wipes, soap, toilet roll, pasta and tinned tomatoes and baked beans - instead of two.

However, other essentials like antibacterial hand gel, UHT milk and baby formula will still be limited to two per customer.

Morrisons

Morrisons has also reassessed its product restrictions, increasing the limit on products from three to four.

Some restrictions will even be removed altogether with the hope it will encourage people to donate to foodbanks.

A spokesperson for Morrisons said: "To make it easier for customers to donate to food banks, purchase limits on items will be raised to four items (from three) and some removed altogether."

Asda

Like Aldi, Asda is easing some product restrictions while others are set to stay in place.

Shoppers are no longer restricted when it comes to fruit, vegetables and chilled products.

However, restrictions of three per customers are still in place across a range of other products, including toilet roll and soap both online and in store.

Meanwhile, Lidl has taken it a step further and removed quantity controls across all groceries, except toilet roll.

However the discount supermarket chain are still urging customers to only buy what they need and say it is at "store managers' discretion".

"We urge customers to continue buying in usual household quantities, in line with our existing policy, to ensure that all customers continue to have access to all of the products that they need," said a Lidl spokeswoman.

"This is, as ever, at our store managers’ discretion and we ask customers for their continued consideration for others when shopping with us."

Waitrose

Waitrose, who have stickers on shop floors to ensure customers comply with social distancing guidance, are also removing limits.

Customers are no longer restricted when it comes to fresh meat, fish, poultry, fruit and vegetables and Easter products. However, there still restrictions on other essential items.

Elsewhere, Tesco and Sainsbury's are yet to announce any changes to their policies.
